At first glance, there was nothing to choose between the two teams but it proved a different matter in reality, with the yellows generally holding a 6 goal lead for much of the game.

So what went wrong – the whisper on the terraces was that the blues had their minds on other matters, notably Jamie, a free spirit dreaming of being that skateboarding champion he never quite managed in his heyday [he played like the knee/elbow pads were still on]; Ged, wondering if gainful employment would ever be found again [a reputation for always being fully occupied but not much productivity]; Andy P, when his next million£ pay cheque would arrive; John H, why had yet another minor escaped the perennial challenger [John, fast becoming the Colin Montgomerie of the Neston Ramblers, known for always being a top earner but never getting that major triumph and subsequent recognition that his efforts deserve] and finally Jim, wondering if a speculative call to Cherie Blair would be well received – she surely needs counselling in how to deal with young people.

Notwithstanding the excuses, the blues were a well beaten outfit – the game getting off to a bad start with an ‘og’ from the ir-redoubtable Mr. Hughes, the blues first touch of the game and only the antics of our resident Jan Tomaszewski [aka John Davies] allowed a margin of respectability to be posted to the outside world; as Brian Clough said ‘He’s a clown’

Never mind blues – there is always next week
